On April 23, 2025, the Policy Center for Human Rights and Sustainable Development (PCHRSD) of the Institute for Policy Innovation and Leadership (IPIL) successfully convened a stakeholders meeting for the institute-funded extension project titled “From Waste to Wealth: Transforming Tambo Market through Circular Economy Innovations.”

The meeting was held at the Learning Commons, 2nd Floor, Main Library, and was attended by representatives from both the government agencies such as City Environment and Management Office, Department of Science and Technology- Lanao del Norte, City Planning and Development Office, Cooperative Development and Livelihood Office, Economic Enterprise Development and Management Office, Public Service Division, Department of Trade and Industry and private sectors like PILMICO.

An officer from the Palao Market Integrated Vendors Association from Tambo market was also present to represent the market vendors. The gathering aimed to articulate the project's vision, explore potential partnerships, and promote community-driven initiatives that seek to innovate the waste management system of the Tambo Public Market through circular economy strategies.

A central theme of the discussion focused on enhancing Tambo Market’s waste management practices by adopting an integrated circular economy approach. This will be operationalized through a series of capacity-building activities, including training sessions and workshops specifically designed for the market vendors, with the objective of fostering sustainable waste transformation practices at the community level.

The project was introduced by Prof. Maria Pia Sison, the project leader of the said extension project, wherein she discussed in detail the objectives and monthly target activities of the project for the market vendors. This was followed by Loverly Nova Yanez, Training Assistant, in presenting the preliminary findings of the needs assessment survey that was conducted last March 27- April 12, 2025, to better understand the context of waste handling and disposal practices of vendors and tailor the initiatives accordingly to the needs of the target beneficiaries.

The stakeholders actively took part in the discussion afterwards, raising various suggestions from their circular economy-related projects. Overall, the meeting produced fruitful results in terms of building partnerships among various stakeholders and the project team towards sustainable waste management in the Tambo Public Market.
